Winter Number One Pest - Rodents

Many people believe that pests slow down coming into the cooler months, however - unlike some of us humans, pests can stay active all winter long!!

Many people believe that pests slow down coming into the cooler months, however - unlike some of us humans, pests can stay active all winter long!!  Not only that but the number one call we have in Autumn and Winter is about rodents.

Just like you and I, rodents want a nice warm place to sleep at night and your home or shed looks wonderfully inviting! So what can you do to protect your home from rodents as your new housemate?

Clearance around buildings

Trees and shrubs that are touching the building are bridges for rodents who love to climb. Trimming back vegetation from buildings and gutters will not only save your gutters, but you’ve removed a fast-track and commonly used highway for the rodents!

Seal it up

Rodents will enter using any means possible - so block up those gaps and holes - look around to locate any gap that is around the size of your pinky for a mouse and around the size of your thumb for a rat. Be sure to use durable materials such as steel wool packed tightly, expandable foam is not durable enough to keep rodents out! Remember to check all your door and window seals and in particular your garage roller doors and these are generally not rodent proof.

Completely remove food

If food is available, rodents will come. Pet food is the most likely enticer as it is sometimes stored outside. Rats have been known to chew thick plastic to get to dog food, so it is time to upgrade to heavy duty storage containers and store the food inside. Also remember to not leave uneaten pet food outside overnight.

DIY

A common DIY rodent control is baiting. However be aware that prevention is better than a cure! If you are seeing and hearing rodents, baiting could be too late. If you can jump onto this and keep it under control using bait, then don’t stop - continue baiting 3-6monhtly. However please be aware of DIY dangers such as not placing baits where non-targets such as children and pets can access it.

Did you know that rats and mice behave differently? There is not a ‘one size fits all’ solution so professional pest managers  will use different rodent control depending on the pest, so it is always best to get it done right the first time by professionals.
